Detailed description

The House

It is a 15 year old custom built two story 4,000 sq ft (incl. a structurally integrated oversized 2-car garage) whose remotely operated double width stained wood door faces north and is not visible when entering the property, it has ample extra space for storing lawn and garden equipment along its sides and it provides access (by a full sized ladder which can be raised and lowered to a large attic area suitable for storage). It has a premium black composition shingled hipped roof (supported strongly enough to be replaced with a ceramic tile roof, if desired). It has weather resistant faux wood grain fiber/cement overlapping planked siding, gas filled double paned windows, and a combination of natural finish hard wood, carpeted master bedroom, family room and office and tiled kitchen and bath rooms floors.

The Downstairs has rooms with 9-10’ high ceilings, except its huge ocean view Living Room which is two-stories high and has a lovely chandelier. A second story balcony with a black iron and stained wood railing runs along its east side and gives a spectacular view of the ocean. It has a slate floored front door entrance area which has a black grill covered windowed front door. It has a remotely activated gas log, two story field stone fireplace (which has a slate hearth) positioned between a glass wall of two pairs of four panel each ocean view picture windows). The Living Room is separated, by a full size (but moveable) matching desk, from a large ocean view kitchen which has a white tile floor, pale blue walls, an ocean view breakfast area, two full walls of floor to ceiling cabinets with blue Corian work tops and matching cabinet door knobs, a vented island with gas stove top and electric barbeque grill on one side and a butcher block preparation and serving area and wet bar sink on its other side and a walk-in storage closet. It has a door leading to a side porch with two benches and which conceals cement stairs leading down to a cement floored half-basement, another door which leads to a laundry and work shop room, which has doors which lead to the garage and to a ocean view patio with electric outlets and a part cemented and part river gravel base. It is enclosed by an ornamental black rail fence with two gates. It is wide enough to sit and enjoy a setting sun and long enough to be used as a dog run.

Between the kitchen and the front door area is a large family room (or formal dining room) with space for a wide screen TV fitted in one of two walls of custom mahogany color storage cabinets. Between the kitchen and the family room are a large walk-in pantry and a half bathroom. A door in the wall of the Living Room opposite the kitchen wall provides access to a hallway closet between an ocean view master bedroom, which has a remote activated gas log fireplace; and a large office (or 2nd bedroom) with a large closet and built in low cabinets along one wall. Between the office and the master bedroom are a pair of large his and hers master full bath rooms, one with a two-person tub with circulating jets and the other with a glass enclosed tile shower with tile bench, and a walk-in closet between the Master BR and the office (or 2nd BR).

The Upstairs rooms are reached from the living room by beautiful curving hardwood stairs. At its north end are a huge ocean view master guest bedroom with a mini-kitchen and closet; an adjacent full tub/shower bathroom; a hall closet, and a semi-finished attic (large enough to use in an emergency guest bedroom). At its north end are a large ocean view office (or guest BR) and a library (or guest bedroom) with a large closet and built-in bookcases; and a walk-through half-bath between them. Connecting the two groups of rooms is an open balcony with a black iron and wood railing which looks down on the living room and which projects from a wall, covered with built-in bookcases, of a closeted second guest bedroom, to which it provides access.

The Garage is a two-car integrated garage whose wooden door is remote controlled and faces north, at right angles to the front of the house. It has ample space on each side for a work bench and space tools and lawn equipment storage. It has a pull down ladder which provides access to unfinished attic storage space over the laundry room. The wood Back Porch is hinged and counterweighted to conceal the cement steps leading to a cement-floored half-basement containing two propane fired hot air furnaces and two hot water heaters and storage space. A gated fenced rose garden is attached to the south side of the house; It has white crushed stone walks and is enclosed with basket weave redwood fencing, which protects the rose bushes from the ocean wind (and the occasional visiting deer). It is accessed from inside the house by a door in the master bedroom and from the lot by a basket weave gate in the fence. It has an electrical outlet for a fountain and a water faucet for watering.

The Lot

The lot is 3.65 acres, flat and filled with mature trees and high shrubs which shields the house from view from the adjacent lots and its S-curved driveway shield it from the two lane paved county road which provides access to it, As previously stated, when one enters the lot one gets the imprfession of quiet seclusion. It is populated by a covey of resident quail and occasionally a fox or a family of deer are visitors. A dead end paved county road with eight high end homes on it, is a short segment of a several mile long dog walking, hiking and biking county trail. Privacy is assured by high shrubs along its north and south lot lines, a long “S” shaped driveway with a variety of evergreen trees along both its sides and the Pacific Ocean on its west side. It has municipal water and sewage, underground telephone and electricity lines, satellite TV and propane gas. It is in a fire district that has deep well municipal water with spring water taste and a fire hidrant just a few lots south of The Lot. And last, but far from being least, because it is ocean front, on clear early evenings, of which there are many year round, its occupants are treated to an amazing diverse kinds of sunsets that can only be experienced to believe, much less describe.

The Neighborhood

The immediate neighborhood is definitely rural in character, with only eight houses on it, on one side only (the ocean side). Horses graze on at least one of its few empty lots. Although the access road (a county two lane paved road) has an exit ramp to Highway 101 in middle of it, because it is only about 1/2 mile long, has only a few houses on and dead ends at both ends, it's vehicle traffic is pretty much limited to residents' cars and delivery vehicles. Because it also is a short segment of a much longer “Hammond Trail”, its users are primary hiking, biking, dog walking pedestrians. Because it presently has no residents with children, it is a very quiet neighborhood with no loud music or other “partying” noise that intrudes into its rural quietness.

The Community

Upon leaving the county access road, either onto Highway 101 or on the road which runs beneath it, past the regional airport trerminal and into the adjacent town (about 3 miles), the atmosphere transforms almost immediately into a small town atmosphere which is large enough to have many churches of diverse faiths, several gas stations, a high end Holiday Inn Express, the regional air port, several long term storrage, a K-Mart, a shopping mall with Safeway and other regional supermarkets and automobile part stores, hardware/building supply stores, several restaurants (including a Denny's), a liquor store, banks, doctor, dentist, orthopedic, veterinarian, pharmacy, investment and real estate offices, banks, mult-screen movie theatre, barber and beauty shops etc. Travel about four miles further you enter the small city of Arcata, a state college town, with many cultural and athletic events. Or go a few miles further south on 101 (a total of less than ten miles and less than that in minutes) to a gambling Casino/motel complex or travel about ten miles north on 101 to a typical waterfront town with another Indian Casino which surprisingly has a high endrestaurant with a superb view of the Pacific Ocean and exellent ambiance, menu and service. Go further south on 101 and you will reach Eureka, the county seat, with many more cultural events and above average restaurants. McKinleyville has a weekly newspaper which specializes in news of local interest and Eureka has a daily paper that attempts to give its readers the world as well as local news. Satellite TV is installed.

If you are concerned that a move to our area would be like going to a frontier town in the 19th century, you couldn't be more wrong. Our area has more professional artists per capita than any other county in California!

Also, as a final reminder, our weather is as benign as one can get year round. (it rarely gets above 75° on the hottest summer day and rarely reaches freezing, even on a cold winter night.). And we have no “traffic jams”. And when turn onto 101 with a 65MPH speed limit where traffic may slow down sometimes to 50MPH as one approaches Eureka in the morning “rush hour” or leaves it in the evening “Rush Hour” when one sometimes misses one traffic light cycle while traveling through town.
